The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Senior Transition and Recovery Training (START) was held in Istanbul from 14–16 September 2026, hosted by the International Federation of Green Crescent (IFGC) at the Green Crescent Headquarters.
The three-day training brought together 18 IOM participants from 17 countries, including Emergency Coordinators, programme and project support staff, alongside 13 IOM trainers and support staff from country missions, regional offices and Headquarters. Participants represented Afghanistan, Austria, Brazil, Greece, Haiti, Lebanon, Malawi, Mozambique, Myanmar, Poland, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, Venezuela and Yemen, as well as IOM Headquarters.
Led by IOM’s Peace, Recovery and Solutions Division (PRSD) under the Department of Humanitarian Response and Recovery (DHRR), START aims to strengthen the capacity of IOM staff working in crisis, displacement and irregular migration contexts, with a focus on transition, stabilization, recovery and durable solutions. The programme combined practical exercises, case studies, scenario-based discussions and peer exchange to support more integrated approaches to recovery and solutions programming.
First Concrete Activity Following the IOM–IFGC MoU
The START training marked the first concrete activity following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IOM and IFGC in May 2026, providing an opportunity to put the partnership into practice through joint engagement and knowledge exchange.
As part of the programme, IFGC delivered a Partner Spotlight session introducing the Federation’s work and its cooperation with IOM, with a particular focus on integrating addiction prevention and recovery into mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) and broader recovery approaches. The session drew on the Turkish Green Crescent’s experience in psychosocial support, migrant-sensitive addiction counselling and prevention approaches for displaced and migrant populations.
Representatives from the Turkish Green Crescent’s Training Department, International Cooperation Department, Federation Management Department, Green Crescent Counselling Center (YEDAM), and Programme & Project Development Department also participated in the training and contributed to relevant sessions and discussions.
The training provided a valuable opportunity for IOM and IFGC to exchange expertise and explore areas for further cooperation. Building on this first activity, the two organizations will continue exploring joint capacity-building, technical exchange and training initiatives, including opportunities to connect IOM Country Offices with Country Green Crescents.
